NEW ORLEANS CITY COUNCIL INVITES YEP TO MAKE SPECIAL PRESENTATION

On January 24, 2019, YEP Co-Founder and Executive Director/CEO Melissa Sawyer, Deputy Director Jerome Jupiter and Director of Programs Darrin McCall were invited to New Orleans City Hall to present highlights of YEP’s 2018 Annual Report.

New Orleans City Councilmembers were updated on YEP’s most current programming being offered to the community. Special thanks to the City Council for continuing to support YEP’s mission which is to:

engage underserved young people through community-based education, mentoring, employment readiness and enrichment programs to help them develop skills and strengthen ties to family and community.

DONOR SPOTLIGHT: BAL MASQUE 2019

YEP staff volunteer at Link Stryjewski Foundation’s Bal Masque

The Link Stryjewski Foundation has been a longtime supporter of YEP’s mission and grateful members of our staff returned this year to volunteer at Bal Masque, the Foundation’s annual fundraising event. The masquerade party on Saturday, January 19 was hosted inside the Sugar Mill in downtown New Orleans. The event featured live New Orleans Brass & Funk, Cajun Dancehall and Haitian Vodou Rock ‘n’ Roots entertainment benefiting several organizations including the Youth Empowerment Project.

Thank you to the Link Stryjewski Foundation and Chefs Donald Link and Stephen Stryjewski for all they do to support and empower youth across New Orleans.

YEP FEST 2019 MUSICAL LINE-UP ANNOUNCED

The Youth Empowerment Project’s (YEP’s) 3rd Annual Fundraiser, YEP Fest presented by IBERIABANK, is just around the corner!

The musical line-up for the festival has been announced and will include: The Hot 8 Brass Band, Bo Dollis Jr and the Wild Magnolias, Carmouche Performing Arts Academy, the YEP Drumline + Dance Team and other surprise guests!

Come out and enjoy live, local music along with competitive pedicab races, delicious food from your favorite food trucks, drinks, raffle giveaways & a Kids Zone! Free admission.

YEP ENRICHES: CAMP MARIPOSA KICKS OFF

CAMPERS AND STAFF ENJOY WEEKEND GETAWAY

The kickoff to YEP’s Camp Mariposa for the 2019 calendar year was a success! On Friday, January 25, a total of 24 campers, along with YEP staff, traveled to Camp Living Waters for three days. The free-of-charge outdoor camp supports children between the ages of 9 and 12 who are impacted by substance use in their families. YEP hosts six camps per year, as well as supplemental enrichment and mentoring activities between camping trips.

Created and supported by the Eluna network, Camp Mariposa® is a national mentoring and addiction prevention program for youth who have been impacted by the substance use disorder of a family member. YEP’s Camp Mariposa was launched in September of 2015 and is part of YEP Enriches programming.

YEP Drumline & Dance Team to perform in Krewe of Iris parade

It’s official! The YEP Drumline and Dance Team are gearing up to march in next month’s Krewe of Iris parade on Saturday, March 2. This will be the group’s first Mardi Gras related performance and they are excited! The YEP Drumline and Dance Team is part of YEP’s enrichment programming. Special thanks to YEP supporter Strong City for helping to sponsor new uniforms for the group. If you see the YEP Drumline and Dance Team on the parade route, please be sure to cheer them on!

  • YEP Works Mardi Gras themed merchandise in retail store and custom decorated shoes created by YEP Thrift Works participant Josh featured on WGNO’s News with a Twist on January 31.
  • YEP’s partnership with Lyft which helps provide transportation to our program participants highlighted by WGNO. Lyft donates a certain number of monthly rides to YEP to help supplement the critical transportation needs of our clients.
  • Nola.com and WGNO feature the Link Stryjewski Foundation’s annual fundraiser Bal Masque 2019 benefiting YEP and other local organizations doing good.
