Youth Empowerment Project

Dear YEP Supporters,

October has been jam packed with several new YEP fundraising & community events along with new activities for our youth participants. We kicked off the month with a successful fundraising cocktail hour, and as the month draws to a close YEP youth participants were able to enjoy an early Halloween party in our Youth Center!

YEP Fundraising Event: Cocktails & Hors D’oeuvres

YEP’s first official fundraising event was held at the home of YEP Board Member Kendall Winingder and her husband, Patrick. The couple were gracious and opened up their beautiful home for the evening fundraiser which garnered approximately $10,000 to benefit YEP’s programming. The event was catered by long-time YEP supporters, Chefs Donald Link and Stephen Stryjewski. The talented duo and their team provided a delicious menu of hors d’oeuvres to approximately 75 guests.

Night Out Against Crime!

On Tuesday, October 17, YEP joined other community partners across the city in Night Out Against Crime 2017. The community event was held at our Youth Center with invitations extended to YEP participants, their families, staff and our neighbors including NOPD Sixth District officers who stopped by to say hello! Special thanks to YEP staff members August and Cedric for grilling up delicious burgers, hot dogs and vegetarian alternatives!

YEP staff sit on Loyola University Public Safety Panel

YEP’s Executive Director & Cofounder Melissa Sawyer along with YEP staff member Darren Alridge were invited to take part in a Loyola University New Orleans panel called “Crime in the Crescent: A Forum About Public Safety in New Orleans.” According to event organizers the goal of the forum was “to have a data-driven discussion about crime, its root causes, and impact upon the city’s quality of life.”

YEP After School Program joins Dryades YMCA Basketball League!

YEP’s basketball court is a popular destination for the young people who drop by our After School Program in search of a game or ten! Now youth between the ages of 11-15 can play against other community groups by joining Team YEP which recently started competing in a basketball league on Friday nights starting at 6 pm at the Dryades YMCA. If you’re in the neighborhood, please stop by and cheer them on!

YEP in the news…

Finally, Happy Halloween from YEP!

YEP’s Youth Center was transformed for a pre-Halloween fun-filled afternoon on October 25 with pumpkin-shaped sugar cookie decorating, face painting and a basketball dunking competition! Later that night, a brave group of 65 YEP youth accompanied by 15 YEP staff took a field trip to check out the Mortuary Haunted Mansion! They had a “terrifyingly good time” said YEP Enrichment Services Program Coordinator Shana Rubenstein.
