YEP recently purchased a new Youth Center, located at 1529 Oretha Castle Haley Boulevard, across the street from YEP's administrative office in Central City. The new youth center has allowed us to double the size of our summer camp, and will also allow us to grow our afterschool program. Both programs have grown exponentially since their inception and no longer fit in the back of our administrative office (where the programs used to be housed). The new youth center will also house a satellite of our New Orleans Providing Literacy to All Youth (NOPLAY) program that provides out-of-school youth ages 16-24 with GED preparation and supportive services. YEP will provide services to an additional 250 youth each year with the purchase of the youth center building.
YEP firmly believes that this new youth center and the programs it will house, will not only positively impact the lives of YEP's youth, it will also work to keep the broader community, and the city, safe. Youth are at the greatest risk of committing or being the victims of violent crime in the four hours following the end of the school day; and there is a direct correlation between the attainment of a GED or high school diploma and a reduction in the risk of engagement in criminal activity.
